Today’s gospel is one of my all time favorites. It contains my favorite bible verse of all time (Luke 1:38). I love it so much it was the gospel that my husband an I chose for our wedding day.
Today’s gospel tells the story of a young girl who is given some very scary news. News that would change her life forever. She admits that she is a little bit scared, but the angel Gabriel tells her not to be afraid, and that all things are possible with God. She then responds with the words: “behold I am the handmaid of the Lord, be it done unto me according to they word.” (Luke 1:26-38)
What a brave thing for her to do. To step out in faith and say yes anyways, even though her life was about to come crumbling down around her.
More often than not, when I find myself in a far less intimidating situation I say to God: hmmmmm actually? Next Thursday would be better for me. Rain Check, okay? Okay. Good Talk.
I long for the day when I have the trust that Our Blessed Mother had as she gave her humble yet glorious yes to the angel that day.
Today’s song is usually associated with Peter, taking his leap of faith out of the boat and into churning waters. But as I was playing it, I was intrigued by the idea that this song so greatly applied to Mary as well.
Listen to this favorite through the eyes and ears of Mary. A young girl, betrothed to a good man who just found out some damning news about herself. What fear and trepidation she must have felt- even if only for a brief and fleeting moment. But with a trust that I may never understand, she said YES anyways.
I hope and pray this advent we all can find the courage to say yes to Him when he calls.
